Most development planning in the corporate world tends to focus on what people see and hear us do. The outside bit. It can seem like a no-brainer to prioritise feedback and advice from your boss and mentors as you put your plan together.

And whilst feedback from others is useful to consider, if your development plan is predominantly driven from the outside-in, it can lack teeth in growing your leadership. It can also feel like a dry to-do list (and end up in a drawer), rather than something you can’t wait to get started on.

What others see is only part of the picture when it comes to developing yourself.

Long term, the most effective way to grow our leadership, is to work on our inner world first.

Without actively looking within, career progression can feel uninspiring, exhausting and all-consuming. But when you start to build a strong inner foundation, your working life starts to feel different.

Rather than feeling like you’re struggling up a hill, on a bike with no gears, you’ll have more moments where you feel like you’re riding down the hill with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face :)

This is what I want more people’s experience of their leadership careers to be.

Which is why I am offering this workshop to help you create a development plan that supports your growth from the inside-out.

So what can this kind of approach look like in practice?

Here’s an example: The Big Presentation to the Executive Team

Scenario One - The Outer Approach:

Before: You decide to brush up on you presentation skills to help you get ready by reading a book or taking a course. You glean some useful tips on how to structure your presentation, and decide to weave in some stories to bring your key points to life. You also get some feedback from a colleague on how to use your voice to make your delivery more compelling. But you place little emphasis on addressing the root causes (inside of you) that makes this feel like such a stretch in the first place. In the lead up, you find spending hours and hours preparing. When you’re trying to relax in the evening, you find your thoughts wandering to the presentation again…When the big day arrives you feel nervous and count down the hours until it’s over.

During: Your heart is racing but you manage to pull yourself together and deliver a solid presentation. You make the points you want to, but it feels a little transactional with little discussion afterwards.

End Result: You get decent feedback, but deep down you know you weren’t at your best. You feel some sense of achievement for doing it, but also feel utterly drained.

Scenario two: The Inside-Out Approach:

Before: As well as brushing up on your presentation skills, you look at and evolve the inner dialogue you are in with yourself when it comes to situations like this. You also get clear on why this presentation matters (beyond your own career development).

You do solid prep, and then trust you will be able to handle whatever happens in the room.

During: You have a few butterflies, but give your presentation with a sense of ease and confidence and provoke a valuable discussion round the table.

End Result: Rather than something you have just ‘got through’ it has been a valuable and fulfilling learning experience and created some powerful outcomes for the organisation.

What You’ll Get From This 90-Minute Workshop:

  • You’ll learn about the three foundational factors involved in having a successful corporate leadership career that feels authentic and meaningful, rather than all-consuming

  • I will guide you to consider what this may mean for your own leadership journey. You’ll have the chance to explore this through individual reflection and in small group break-out exercises with the other like-minded leaders

  • You’ll walk away empowered to create a personal development plan that excites and inspires you and that helps you move towards a leadership career that feels life-affirming

It is a workshop I will likely charge for at some point in the future but for now, I’m offering it at no charge.

All I ask is that, if you book a place, you show up. I am limiting the number of seats at each event to create an in-person feel. If you’d like to come but the date doesn’t work, you can opt to receive my email updates here and be notified of future dates.

When you sign up for the workshop, you will be added to my community of email subscribers. You can of course unsubscribe after the event.

I hope to see you there.

All my best,

Claire

p.s. This is not a one of those ‘free events’ where very little useful information is shared, and when you get there you realise it’s mainly a sales pitch. My intention is to facilitate an enjoyable, thought-provoking session with an in-person feel, that will empower you as you walk away.

Towards the end of the workshop, for no more than 5 minutes, I will let you know about my current offerings.

You can also read about the different ways you can work with me here, including the next cohort of my group programme, The Inside-Out Leader , commencing in October 22, which will be open for registration soon.

p.p.s I often receive messages from people who choose to come along to the session. Some excerpts below…

"My mindset on development plans has completely changed after attending the workshop yesterday. I have not only come away with a completely refreshing view on how to ensure my development plan benefits me and the organisations I work for, but I am also inspired to make sure I help those I work with and lead to do the same." Kerry Horvath, Environmental and Energy Manager, Hammerson

“The session was engaging, thought provoking and gave me a push to look at my development plan with fresh eyes. After the session I took the time to focus on myself and updated my development plan. This gave me the confidence to go for a promotion at work, and I got it! Anyone wanting to think about their development plan and growth as a leader in a different way, won't be disappointed!" Holly Messenger, Assistant Director of Growth and Development, Mount green Housing Association

“Just a quick thank you note to say how inspired I was by the session.  I can honestly say in 20 years as a HR professional it is the first time my development plan will actually be entirely focussed on such personal development and I am hoping it will lead to a very different type of conversation with my boss.  I am going to start the conversation with the opening line “this is unapologetically different.” Senior HR Business Partner, global consultancy firm
